Palestra Sobre Simulação e Modelagem de Humanos Virtuais
Os pesquisadores suiços Dra. Nadia Thalmann e Dr. Daniel Thalmann estarão visitando o Instituto de Matemática no próximo dia 04 de junho. Ambos atuam na área de simulação e modelagem de humanos virtuais. O objetivo da visita é colaboração com os pesquisadores do Instituto de Matemática da área de Computação Gráfica e a apresentação de palestras. A Dra. Nadia Thalmann falará sobre seus 25 anos de pesquisa em simulação de humanos virtuais. O Dr. Daniel Thalmman apresentará uma palestra sobre a simulação de multidões em tempo-real.

Since early eighties, we have started a research on simulating the Virtual Humans. First of all, we model a stick figure that we animated and used procedural programming. Later on, in 1987, we simulated in a pretty realistic way Marilyn and Humphrey meeting in a cafe in Montreal. Since then, we have constantly tried to make the design and animation of bodies and head fully automatic. We have worked on Hair and clothes using physical-based models. Our research has also been on mixed realities where we have produced scenes where we can see real Pompeei in Italy augmented by virtual life of its former inhabitants. More recently, we spent a lot of time to record MRI scanned data to reconstruct precise articulations of individual persons. In our talk, we will show case studies in body modelling, body animation, clothes animation, cultural heritage and anatomical-based humans.
Prof. Nadia Magnenat-Thalmann has pioneered research into virtual humans over the last 25 years. She obtained several Bachelor's and Master's degrees in various disciplines (Psychology, Biology and Chemistry) and a PhD in Quantum Physics from the University of Geneva in 1977. From 1977 to 1988, she was a Professor at the University of Montreal where she founded the research lab MIRALab. She was elected WOMAN OF THE YEAR in the Grand Montreal for her pioneering work on virtual humans and presented the artistic part of her work at the MODERN ART MUSEUM in New York in 1988

For many years, this was a challenge to produce realistic virtual crowds for special effects in movies. Now, there is a new challenge: the production of real-time autonomous Virtual Crowds. Real-time
crowds are necessary for games, VR systems for training and simulation and crowds in Augmented Reality applications. Autonomy is the only way to create believable crowds reacting to events in real-time. But, this requires to solve many problems: flexible animation of individuals, behavioural animation, real-time
rendering, level of details, interface. In this talk, we will present these techniques illustrated by examples in Cultural Heritage and Social Phobia.
Professor Dr. Daniel Thalmann is Professor and Director of The Virtual Reality Lab (VRlab) at EPFL, Switzerland. He is a pioneer in research on Virtual Humans. He is coeditor-in-chief of the Journal of Computer Animation and Virtual Worlds, and member of the editorial board of 5 other journals. He is Program Cochair of CGI 2007 and Virtual Rehabilitation 2007, and the Conference CoChair of CASA 2007, SCA 2007, and ACM VRST 2008. He has also organized 5 courses at SIGGRAPH on human animation. Daniel Thalmann has published numerous papers in Graphics, Animation, and Virtual Reality. He is coeditor and coauthor of many books including the "Handbook on Virtual Humans", published by John Wiley and Sons. He received his PhD in Computer Science in 1977 from the University of Geneva and an Honorary Doctorate (Honoris Causa) from University Paul- Sabatier in Toulouse, France, in 2003.
